Level 1 Workshop

For adults age 16 and beyond regardless of experience or ability.

It’s never too late to fulfill your childhood dream of becoming a ballet dancer, and this all-in-one workshop provides the ballet fundamentals, supportive atmosphere, and confidence to make your dream of dance a reality. Adults who are new to dance, and people who have been dancing their whole lives, are welcome and can benefit from this class. This class is also extremely beneficial for people who are recovering from injury, and for older adults who wish to improve their flexibility and mobility.

Class begins with 30 minutes of stretching and conditioning to isolate and strengthen the muscle groups needed for flexible movement and injury prevention. The next portion of the class focuses on movement and position of the head, body, arms and legs using exercises facing the barre with both hands on the barre for maximum support. The class finishes with center work where students perform dance combinations without a barre to learn how to engage the muscle groups they used to sustain balance and transfer weight during the class. Center work includes port de bras and jumping exercises.

Duration and frequency: One hour and 45 minutes. Offered on Saturdays.

Adult Int. Ballet

Technique, artistry, and acting come together for the first time in the intermediate adult ballet class. Dancers will continue to strengthen and refine the muscle groups needed for precise alignment of the body, limbs, and head. As students master muscle control they will increasingly devote more effort to the detail, ornamentation, and emotion conveyed by each movement.

Class begins with 45 minutes of stretching, exercises, and balancé with one hand on the barre. The second half of the class is center work where students practice balancé, learn more advanced and expressive variations and port de bras, and condition their legs in more complex and traveling jumping exercises. On Saturdays, students learn variations, acting, and have the opportunity to practice their partnering skills.

Duration and frequency: 90 minutes. Offered on Monday and Wednesday 6:30-8pm without partnering. On Saturday, a Variations class that follows Intermediate Ballet offer variations, acting, and the opportunity to practice their partnering.

Prerequisites: Three years of ballet experience and a fluent understanding of ballet terminology.

What to wear and bring to class: Leotard or a yoga top and yoga pants. Ballet slippers. Bring a floor mat for exercises and stretching.
